shirl_carryon

Greetings Shirleyphiles!
Welcome to another 40 minutes of lo-fi lovliness and how bona to varda your dolly old eeks!!

This show has a rather large ooo-er factor and is dedicated to all those who enjoy a little something of the double entendre. That is all of you cheeky blighters, right? We suspect it will have each and every one of you slapping your thighs and pursing your lips in a collective nirvana of “Carry On” proportions.

Its a rather saucy little selection this time around with Julian and Sandy aka Kenneth Williams and Hugh Paddick, John Inman, Rita Hayworth, Bette Midler, Rambling Syd Rumpo aka Kenneth Williams, Joan Sims, Blossom Dearie, Barbara Stanwyck, Benny Hill, Anthony Newley and Noel Coward all doing their very best to make you raise one eyebrow and cross your legs at the same time! Fantabulosa!

Until next time, take absolute care and play fair!

02:03:13 In a Sentimental Mood with Shirl

shirl_sentimental

Greetings radioShirleyphiles and welcome to another 40 minutes or so of <insert your favourite genre here>

It may be due to the rather gloomy rainy weather we’re experiencing here in the environs of Casa Shirl, but in this show, radioShirl gets down to a few deep and meaningfuls via a few tunes that have, at one time or another, had her dissolve into a puddle of tears. After all this time and repeated listens, some of them still hold a transformative power that has her well up and mop up an absolute torrent of mascara!

Now, I hear you guffaw as you look down the list of artists in this episode, “Burl Ives!?” Yes indeed! The particular Burl Ives track in this show once drove Shirl to tears … though maybe not for the same reason as it may drive yourselves. To each their own and the significance of that song to radioShirl is her little secret. Mind you, the manservant just put it down to me being … “overtired”.

Whether its catharsis, melancholy, a healthy dose of solipsism, a momentary-charged lyric or just a gorgeous string arrangement that sets me off, your favourite sob sister, radioShirl likes nothing more than have a good howl once in a while. Its healthy, right? Just like a Carrot Dacquiri!

So, tissues at the ready my low-fi luvverlies and do … take a moment once in a while to wonder where the time goes

11:02:2013 ::: radioShirley presents “Sonny & Shirl sing a Duet for You!”

shirl_matjon
Greetings radioShirleyphiles and welcome to 40 minutes or so of double trouble!

mr.K & myself don’t produce as many shows celebrating birthdays as we use to but the subjects of this show – repurposed as it is from a show originally broadcast back in 2006 – are the exception! Indeed, the subjects in question are exceptional! Shirleyphiles, let me introduce you to the dynamic duo that is Mat & Jon Price!

Mat & Jon are identical twin brothers from the UK who have started a project called Proud2Be which is an organisation “that is dedicated to encouraging and supporting all lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, questioning & intersex (LGBTQ&I) people to be proud of who they are, helping raise self esteem and self worth in such individuals and being part of a social and cultural change that makes it safe for LGBTQ&I people to be proud.”

I stumbled across their project via Twitter in 2012 when a tweet of support from none other than Stephen Fry came through my twitter stream. A little searching here and there and lo and behold, mr.K noticed that Mat & Jon were going on air, in just a few hours to deliver their weekly radio show from Devon in the U.K. We decided, after a coffee or three to stay up late – after all it was going to air at four in the morning (radioShirley time) – and listen in on their live stream. In that particular show, the boys were interviewing a local trans identity, Shirley. Shirley?! Shirley?!! Well, you could have blown me over with the synchronicity of it all – except I was sitting up in bed with bed with mr.K who was firmly attached to his pince-nez and pouring over some dreary work-related academic paper.

Of course, I had to tweet through to Mat & Jon while they were on air and let them know that there was another Shirley out there listening in from Australia! Ha! They were thrilled and the spookiness of the situation was not lost on them or their guest du jour! *radioShirley waves hello to her Devon namesake*

Since then, mr.K and yours truly have been avid followers of the project, listening live whenever we can but always making sure to catch up with the fabulous Proud2Be podcasts. They’re a weekly highlight for us. Mat & Jon are so funny! So informative and give great interview! We’ve been back and forth to the boys with a tweet here, a tweet there or a drop a post or two on their Facebook page.

Mat & Jon’s Proud2Be project has been steadily gaining significant exposure especially in the UK. Already having been nominated for a Princes Trust Award, (btw, mr.K is wondering he says when I’m going to be nominated for a Princess Trust Award) we’re just thrilled to bits that they’ve been nominated for a National Diversity Award for their work to date. Check out their project website, the fantastic videos people have been submitting and like them on Facebook. Staring into the tea leaves, I suspect that 2013 will shape up to be a very very big year for these guys. Their dance card is filling up rather nicely thank you very much!

So radioShirleyphiles, please join me in wishing the gorgeous Mat & Jon of the Proud2Be Project, a super duper birthday by grabbing a significant other, be it animal, vegetable, mineral, human or battery powered and settle back for 45 minutes of low-fi lovliness as yours truly & mr.K, madly and deeply celebrate the power of two with a collection jam packed with other terrific twosomes!

Until next time, take care and play fair!

11:01:13 radioShirley presents Slumber Land

shirl_slumberland

Greetings radioShirleyphiles and welcome to 40 minutes or so of soporific sounds!

Well this show, which is a headphone privileged aural adventure may not induce sleep as such – at least keep those toothpicks under the eyelids until the very very end if you must – but it is guaranteed to take you down and along some surreal twisting and turning pathways not unlike those experienced when we traverse the landscape of Nod. Choose your footwear weapon of choice ; ruby slippers, bare feet, thigh high leather lovelies, hooves or magic carpet flip flops, the choice is yours.

“He had the face of one who walks in his sleep, and for a wild moment the idea came to me that perhaps he was not normal, not altogether sane. There were people who had trances, I had surely heard of them, and they followed strange laws of which we could know nothing, they obeyed the tangled orders of their own sub-conscious minds.”
― Daphne du Maurier, Rebecca

“What if you slept? And what if, in your sleep, you dreamed? And what if, in your dream, you went to heaven and plucked a strange and beautiful flower? And what if, when you awoke, you had the flower in your hand? Ah, what then?” – Samuel Taylor Coleridge

So Shirleyphiles, its time to wrap your troubles in dreams and drift off into the arms of Morpheus with mr.K & moi. Tagging along for the sleepwalk among a cast of many dropping in from Under Milk Wood, will be the deee-liteful Lady Miss Kier Kirby, the stunning Silver Sircus, mister Ambien himself, Brian Eno, Shirl’s favourite lovers of the underworld, Underground Lovers, the Sonny & Cher of my dreams, Lou & Laurie and simmering away in their dream kitchen, the gone but not forgotten, Frazier Chorus.

Until next time, take care and play fair!

26:12:12 :::: radioShirley presents MEGAMIX 2012

megamix2012

Greetings radioShirleyphiles and welcome to a HUGE show!

This one was originally mixed back in 2003 and sent across the globe to a number of radioShirley subscribers in CD format as a gift for their support and enthusiasm for the shows presented thus far. Presented then as ‘a radioShirley kind of Christmas’ there are a few seasonal tunes done in the radioShirley style peppered throughout but as you’ve come to expect, the whole show is a grab bag of eclectic tunes and soundbytes peeled, chopped and thrown into some weird blender with mr.K’s finger firmly positioned on the ‘pulse’ button.

I’ve had a listen back to it and the manservant has persuaded me to upload it for you all to enjoy and download as a gesture of thanks for your continued support as radioShirley enters its 11th year … yes 11 years of having you itching and twitching on the netwaves! So consider this OUR 10th anniversary! Thank you!

We’ve broken it up into easily digestible bite size pieces for your maximum aural nourishment to listen to and download. There are so many artistes in this show that it is nigh impossible to list them all. So, the suggested way to approach this MEGAMIX is as a lucky dip straight off the slipmat of love from us to you!

From mr.K and yours, truly, madly and deeply, we wish you the very best for a fabulous year ahead and thank you for your tuning in from here, from mixcloud and jumping into the impromptu live streams on our mixlr station. We hope to do more of these live streams as a regular occurrence as they’ve been so much fun having listeners in the room chatting with us, requesting tunes and generally just being naughty as we do this thing.

remember, take care and play fair!

Greetings radioShirleyphiles and welcome to another 45 minutes of aural hijinx!

As the previous show was all about being struck mute and rather mental in the instrumental department, I decided to un-gag the manservant (despite his protestations to the contrary) and request … no … demand … that he get working on a show that was the polar opposite. Yes. I want talk. Yes. I want to hear words. Yes. I want to delight in the jeux avec la langue that some of the more intrepid daredevils of the musical and poetry world have gifted us. Oh, don’t worry. Don’t worry. Don’t worry as Yoko shrieks. This episode is no unrelenting highbrow literary POESIA SONORA that will have you chewing your tongue off and throwing it to the dogs of onomatopoeia. Especially when there are the likes of radioShirl’s favourite local nautical naughties like THE GOOD SHIP thrown into the aural soup just to bring it down and pepper it up to your taste.

So Shirleyphiles, its time to lubricate your collective glotti, and practice your best mannered Laurie Anderson “Are you talking to me or are you just practicing for one of those performances of yours?” vocal stylings with a toothbrush in hand while Laurie, Patti, Yoko, Gertrude, Lucky, Brian, Diane, Hank, Morphine, Andy, the fabulous Wierdos and a cast of many throw a hatful of syllables into your ear canals!

Until next time, take care and play fair!
